TOWN NAMES

 

CANAAN

 

CAREY’S CORNER/QUICKTOWN – near Madisonville, named for B. Parker Carey who came here in 1845

 

LUZERNE COUNTY – was established in 1786 and was named for Chevalier de la Luzerne, a minister of France to the United States

 

MADISON TOWNSHIP – in Drinker’s Beech and named for President Madison

 

MADISONVILLE – named for President Madison and was the first settlement made by Thomas Depew in 1825.  Its next settler was William Evans who came here in 1830

 

MAPLE LAKE – originally called Rattlesnake Pond until the turn of the century.  Its first settler was John Kreidler who built a log cabin near the Methodist Church in 1851

 

MAPLEWOOD – formerly known as Forest Mills in Wayne County, near the Lackawanna line

 

MILLVILLE – once the name of South Canaan Township, now Varden

 

MONROE COUNTY – was established in 1835 and named for the 5th President of the United States
