THORNHURST
THORNHURST TOWNSHIP
The Gould Tannery was located between the Lehigh River and River Road in
the area opposite where Bear Lake Road and River Road intersect in downtown
Thornhurst.
Thornhurst was not Sand Cut but was called the Great Pine Swamp.
1680 – Bucks County comprised of now Northampton, Monroe, Wayne,
Susquehanna, Wyoming, Luzerne, Lackawanna, Carbon, Lehigh and part of Schuykill
Counties.
1752 – Northampton was then established
1768 – Wilkes-Barre Township was created
1786 – Luzerne County was established
1787 – H.W. and Richard Drinker purchased 25,000 acres and called in
Drinker’s Beech
1818 - Covington Township was created
1833 – Buck Township was created
1840 – The Village of Comfortville was established
1851 – Brown
Town (named after the Brown brothers who built the dam on the Lehigh) was
established
1856 – The Village of Gouldsboro was created
1871 – Gouldsboro was incorporated as the borough of Gouldsboro on May
12.
The line ran from Pond Creek along the river to Sand Spring Run and
crossed about 1 1/3 miles up Bear Lake Road from River Road
1878 – Lackawanna County was removed from Lehigh Township
1894 – Postmaster (R.C. Drum) worked in the borough of Gouldsboro and
started calling his post office the Thornhurst Post Office
Pine Grove Cemetery sat near the old township school, and was also known
as the Briar Patch School.
There is three different parts of Lehigh Township now known as
Thornhurst Township.
They were Bear Lake Community, Warsaw Village and Mount
Ebenezer which is a hill.
The Steigmeier Estate is owned by Karls Rue.
In 1952, El Pocono Dude Ranch bought it, changing its
name to Twin Lakes then to Thornhurst Country Club Estates.
There is also a small development by the name of Pine
Grove Acres.
On May 4, 1939, the borough of Gouldsboro reverted and became part of
Lehigh Township.
The Borough was annulled and became the Village of Thornhurst in
Lehigh Township.
In 1960, a post office was lost and moved to Gouldsboro.
December 4, 1995, Lehigh Township was renamed to
Thornhurst Township and is now the Village of Thornhurst.
In 1996, the Postal Service was allowed back in
Thornhurst Township and once again used Thornhurst with a Gouldsboro zip code.
